WERREGUE â—™ hilos del territorio â—™
100% hand made by women artisans from the wounnan tribe in Colombia
Sustainable hand made art decorative pieces laboriously crafted by aboriginal women from the pacific tropical rain forest in Colombia
About our products: Werregue pieces are 100% handwoven from werregue fiber by artists artisans from the Wounaan community. These artworks are the result of the skillful hands of women who have preserved and handed down this ancestral knowledge from generation to generation for hundreds of years. The amazing and painstaking process begins with the collection of raw material from the jungle in the South American Pacific rainforest near "the Darien Gap"  (out of the Werregue Palm, which only grows in this part of the earth), through the dyeing of fibers with natural pigments, to the final weaving of each piece. The werregue palm is stripped, dried and dyed with native plants before being woven.  The baskets and plates are formed first by building coils made up of this same palm bunched together in individual strips, and then the weaving is done using a needle, each layer of weaving being built upon the last coil. The werregue palm leaves are white/beige, and the vibrant colors also come from natural products: puchican leaves for the green, achote for the orange, saffron for the yellow, and the black is achieved by mixing puchicana with mud and the final process involves heating over a slow fire in wood ovens. It's the women of this community, who in addition to leading the production of the handcrafts within their families, weave and market their products locally.  Talented and creative artists who shape figures that evoke their customs, habits, natural resources and the struggles they have suffered. These pieces are not just objects; they are a part of every woman who devotes up to 5 months in each piece’s production. Each product is distinguished as a unique piece, due to its organic materials, the handmade process, and the variety of designs of the objects and figures depicted. They are used for home decoration, and as part of private collectors' collections of ethnic decorative objects.  It is the feeling and sensitivity manifested through the art of a culture called Wounaan.
